Based on a project by Frighi (an engineer) and the technical-creative collaborator of Minister Edmondo Rossoni (the refounder of Tresigallo), Tresigallo hospital in the Municipality of Tresignana (Ferrara) (formed in 2019 with the merger of the Municipalities of Tresigallo and Formignana), was inaugurated at the end of 1939 after 3 years of work, in the south-east quadrant of town.
The impressively sized building has five floors and is made with cavity walls. Features of note include: the chapel for religious functions, the terrace/solarium, the porthole-shaped windows and the spiral stairwell of the central building. When the town was being refounded, the building housed convalescent women who were preparing to re-join the workforce.
Its characteristic materials and decorative details are recurring elements of the ‘facciata” architecture typical of the 1930s. The symmetrical outline balances the front tower, traditional materials and construction techniques were used and high windowed pilasters and frames outlined in marmetta (a marble derivative) were added.
It is surrounded by a large park bordered by a perimeter wall which hides a large part of the building, but provides a striking setting. Twin service buildings flank the tree-lined drive, at the entrance on piazzale Forlanini.
