Description

The Trepponti or Pallotta Bridge is the most unique and famous bridge in Comacchio (Ferrara). Designed in the 17th century by Luca Danese and built by Giovanni Pietro da Lugano, it has been significantly modified over the centuries.
Built in brick on an irregular flattened pentagon, one side is almost twice the others. The sizes of the sides are determined by the width of the five canals which meet beneath the bridge forming a crossroad leading to the various parts of the city or to the sea.
The bridge has five load-bearing arches that discharge onto the foundations, forming a single load-bearing vault in the centre. Five stairways connect the routes of the various canals: two ramps, towards the outside, flank the Pallotta canal, while the other three face the urban centre. There is a small square on the central vault.
