Lago Santo in Pievepelago (Modena), nestled among the green mountains of the Modena Apennines, is a destination for hikers and walkers who come to forage for mushrooms and blueberries and to walk and relax in an environment far from the frenetic pace of modern civilization.
Located at an altitude of 1501 m, the lake has a perimeter of 1.3 km and a depth of about 10 m. It can be easily reached by car and on foot by numerous paths.
Glacial in origin, there are many popular legends about the origin of its name which refer to the death of young lovers or hunters who drowned after falling through the icy surface of the lake, and the subsequent sanctification of its water.
The lake freezes during winter and becomes invisible as a white expanse that does not demonstrate the presence of water; the ice can reach a thickness of 50/60 cm and more.
