Blasted into the red porphyry rock of Monte di Mezzo (Mitterberg) Mountain, the stone cellars of Laimburg Research Centre comprise a 300-square-metre vaulted venue for events that accommodates up to 100 people and the cask and bottle storage cellars of Laimburg Province Winery.
The walls and ceiling of the tunnel-shaped complex are unhewn. The entrance to the cellars is via the adjacent building. Giant wine barrels, decorated with woodcarvings, welcome visitors to the stone cellars: entering feels a bit like going into a mine tunnel. To the visitor, the reception room seems like a soaring sacred space; there are tables, and seating for 100 people is available. In the adjacent tunnels, also blasted out of rock, you’ll find the bottle and ageing cellar: here, there are long rows of light-coloured oak barrels, in various sizes, with burgundy stripes down the centres. It is illuminated with light coming from spots in the floor and lights shining on the cliffs.
A celebration space (the cupola) and a small gallery of archaeological finds from the Ice Age form the Cellar in the Rock.
