Borghetto is a hamlet of Valeggio sul Mincio (Verona) and one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. The little fortified village developed in the 1400s on the Mincio river around a range of watermills. The historical centre still conserves the look of a medieval borgo with a belltower, ancient mill stones (once used to grind wheat and cereals), and the Visconti bridge (also known as ponte Lungo). The bridge – 650m long, 25m wide – is part of a fortified dam built in 1393 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan.
The Visconti bridge is, furthermore, connected to the imposing Scaligero Castle, both are part of the ancient Serraglio fortified complex, once a key tool in the defence of the territory with an enclosing 16km wall.
The little 18th century Church of St Mark the Evangelist and the statue of St. John Nepomuk, believed to protect those who fall into the river, stand on the alleyways.
