Disco Boy, debut film from Giacomo Abbruzzese is the only Italian film in competition at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival. Co-produced with Italy’s Dugong Films, it will be distributed in Italy by Lucky Red from 9 March.
Shot in Europe and Africa with an international cast, the film is a French/Italian/Belgian/Polish coproduction, financed by Italy’s DGCA with a contribution of €140,000 (€50,000 from CNC) from the Italy – France 2020 Grant.
After a tricky journey across Europe, Aleksei (Franz Rogowski) reaches Parigi to volunteer for the French Foreign Legion, a highly selective military body which provides its foreign members, even those with no documents, with a French passport.
In the Niger Delta, Jomo (newcomer Morr Ndiaye) fights the oil multinationals threatening the survival of his village, while his sister Udoka (Laëtitia Ky) dreams of escape, aware that all is already lost.
Beyond the borders, beyond life and death, their destinies meet.
