Medici: Season 3 on air

Broadcast of the third season of the TV drama series about Lorenzo the Magnificent, entitled Medici - The Beauty and the Power, has begun on RAI. Season 2 of the Big Light, Lux Vide, Wild Bunch, Rai Fiction, Altice Studio co-production ended with the so-called Pazzi Conspiracy and subsequent death of Giuliano de’ Medici. Several months on, Lorenzo (Daniel Sharman) is tormented by the desire to avenge his brother. An art lover, Lorenzo continues to lend his patronage to great artists including Leonardo da Vinci while a new key figure appears in the series, the monk Girolamo Savonarola (Francesco Montanari). The cast features new characters (Neri Marcorè as Pope Innocent VIII) and familiar faces: including Synnøve Karlsen as Clarice Orsini, Alessandra Mastronardi as Lucrezia Donati and Aurora Ruffino as Bianca de’ Medici. Bradley James as the late Giuliano will appear in flashback.

The series used various locations across Central and Northern Italy, with thirty sets overall: Florence is still the centre of events, with scenes shot at Palazzo Vecchio, Basilica di San Lorenzo, Palazzo del Bargello, the Baptistery and the Duomo, with Tuscany also providing other settings in the areas around Volterra and Val d’Orcia, Pienza and Montepulciano. Locations in Lazio included: Villa Giulia in Rome, the Castle of Santa Severa, Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, the San Pellegrino neighbourhood in Viterbo, and the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano. In Lombardy, the Porta Imperiale in Sabbioneta and the Castle of St. George in Mantua were used for the exteriors of the Sforza residences while the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua provided the Papal throne room.
