Where it was filmed 'The King's Musketeers'

Years after their legendary exploits, D’Artagnan is raising cattle, Athos is the libidinous governor of a castle, Aramis a monk in debt and Porthos a drunken inn keeper. The four heroes show up for duty when summoned by the Queen: the location is the Palazzo Reale of Genoa, especially the sumptuous Galleria degli Specchi decorated with gold leaf, mouldings and frescoes on the ceilings, the ballroom and throne room. The exterior is provided by Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati (province of Rome). The antagonists of the story are Cardinal Mazzarino and Milady who conspire against King Louis XIV in the apartments of Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia: one of the locations in Lazio used in the film, another being Poldo’s farm in Aprilia.

As their mission unfolds, the Musketeers travel long distances on horseback, crossing the landscapes of the Basilicata region, past ancient farmhouses and castles. The Abbot Aramis is found in the Abbey of St Michael Archangel in Montescaglioso, while our heroes ride past the Diga di San Giuliano and its nature reserve, Tramontano Castle, Masseria Moliterni, the Calanchi, Montalbano and Scanzano Jonico, Pisticci and Accettura and the Lombard Castle of Sichinulfo at Grottole. Other locations include the Vulture, between Venosa and Melfi, the Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the Small Lucan Dolomites, the Val d’Agri: from the Rifugio dei Pastori to Viggiano, the Plain of Lake Marsico Vetere and Marsico Nuovo, and Pietrapertosa.
