Costanza is the television adaptation of the novel Questione di Costanza by Alessia Gazzola, the first volume of a trilogy dedicated to the adventures of paleopathologist Costanza Macallè.
The 8-episode Rai series is set and was filmed in Verona. Although the opening images feature Costanza’s hometown, Messina, the scenes were shot, along with some interiors, near the bastions of Civitavecchia.
Verona plays a key role in the series with the characters who live there. “We avoided the best -known parts, the too obvious places like the Arena” notes director Fabrizio Costa, “but still filmed at ponte Pietra, Castelvecchio bridge, above the Roman theatre and in the streets of the historic centre. We also used a beautiful school whose courtyard overlooks the Adige (Flora's school) and Montorio Castle, which stands imposingly on a hill beside Verona, which allowed us to recreate the evocative atmosphere for the medieval part of the story, exactly where the events took place”.
Other locations included: the monumental complex Rocca di Monselice and the diocesan Museum of Vicenza, where the characters search for an image of Selvaggia di Staufen.

Costanza is a single mother in her thirties, who has just moved from Messina to Verona with her six-year-old daughter Flora to work as a paleopathologist. Verona is also the hometown of Flora's father, Marco ... who has never known about his daughter.
The passion between Costanza and Marco was intense but very brief, broken by the discovery that he was engaged. The moment of revelation has now arrived, and things are very complicated: Marco is about to get married, while Costanza is working with charming linguist Ludovico, with whom she immediately developed a strong attraction.
Costanza needs to balance her private life with a demanding and unusual job, where her colleagues are also fierce rivals. Her task, which will determine her professional future, is to discover the identity of a woman whose remains were found during the excavation of a medieval cemetery, potentially the illegitimate daughter of Frederick II of Swabia: she has red hair, just like Costanza.
