Description

Located between the Colosseum and the Arch of Titus on the Roman road dedicated to triumphs, the Arch of Constantine is the largest honorary arch that has survived to the modern day. It was built to celebrate Emperor Constantine’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (28 October 312) as indicated in the inscription above the central bay and was inaugurated in 315 to mark ten years of the Emperor’s reign. The highly decorated arch features sculptures, most of which come from older monuments and six long panels that recount the campaign against Maxentius in episodes.
