Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of Italy’s exceptional wine producing areas, focussed but not limited to white wine.
Just over half the region is covered with hills, with roughly 20% mountainous areas and 40% plateaus, and approx. 20,000 hectares of land are farmed for grapes. The white grape vines represent about 50% of the total output and the vineyards spread out over both flat (60%) and hilly (35%) areas.
The most important white wines produced here are Tocai friulano, Verduzzo friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Picolit, plus Malvasia Istriana and Vitovska in the area near Trieste. Autochthonous red grapes include Pignolo, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Tazzelenghe, Schioppettino and Terrano, mostly concentrated in the Carso area.
Some of the most important international grapes include Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Cultivation here mostly uses the Capuccina (double-arched cane) and Casarsa systems.
