The Mendola funicular in Alto Adige runs from Sant’Antonio (hamlet of Caldaro) to the Mendola pass. The present-day journey of 2,370m lasts 12 minutes and climbs 854m, from an initial altitude of 510m to arrival at 1,364m with a slope of between 57% and 64%.
The Mendola funicular officially began service on 19 October 1903; its most famous passenger was the Emperor Franz Joseph who used it when headed to Val di Non in 1905 to take part in military manoeuvres. The carriages were renewed in early 2009, and an intermediary station opened in August that year which allows excursionists from the Alta Via of Caldaro to make use of it.
