The Natural monument Tenuta di Mazzalupetto, located in the north west of the capital between the Rome- Viterbo train line and the ring road (raccordo anulare), comprises high plains and valley floors typical of the landscape of upper Lazio. The fauna of the area, which covers 180 hectares, boasts a wide variety of birds of prey and mammals including the Apennine shrew and the bank vole while the flora is principally holm, cork and downy oak. Most of the land, vast plains in tuff stone interrupted by low flat-bottomed valleys, is used today for intensive farming.
During the Middle Ages, this landscape was travelled by pilgrims coming from the Cassia and Aurelia consular roads headed for Rome’s Papal Jubilees. Located only several hundred metres from the buildings of the city, the area has an important role as an ecological corridor and requires careful guardianship to guarantee the conservation of the natural environment in the urban areas.
