The parco regionale urbano di Aguzzano (Aguzzano Regional City Park) is a city park of 60 hectares located in the north east of Rome between the neighbourhoods of Talenti, Rebibbia and San Basilio. Its name derives from “Auzano”, a large agricultural estate owned by the ancient Roman family, Acutia. The entire area developed quickly during Roman times because of the vicinity of the via Tiburtina and the river Aniene. This explains the ruins of an imperial villa with thermal rooms and mosaic floors in the park. When Rome lost her commercial and political hegemony, the agricultural area was deserted by its inhabitants, becoming the setting for pitched battles as the numerous watchtowers attest. For centuries the countryside was inhospitable, used only for breeding livestock, until the draining of the Ager Romanus in 1870 which transformed the area and four farmhouses were built.
Today, the Aguzzano Park acts as a linkage between the densely populated, recently built neighbourhoods of Casal Monastero and Torraccia and the valley of the river Aniene. Towards the foot of the San Basilio stream, the area is used for agriculture with crops and livestock breeding creating a harmonious rural-urban ecosystem. The park is managed by the regional body RomaNatura in collaboration with the Comune di Roma, LIPU and Associazione Podere Rosa.
