Vizzini, on the slopes of mount Lauro in the south east of the province of Catania, is one of Siciliy’s most ancient cities, destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and entirely rebuilt.
Palazzo Verga and Palazzo Municipale stand on piazza Umberto I. Adjacent to the latter is salita Marineo, a stairway decorated with tiles featuring geometrical and floral designs. Other places of interest include the Chiesa Madre dedicated to San Gregorio, the Basilica of San Vito and the Church of St. Agatha. The Museo “Immaginario Verghiano”, which includes the permanent display of Giovanni Verga’s photos is housed in a 18th century building in the historical centre.
To the north of Vizzini, the borgo of a Cunziria has a small group of 19th century houses, used to work and tan leather. Adjacent to the houses are the watermill and the little Church of Sant'Eligio. This site and other places of interest in Vizzini inspired the setting of the famous novella Cavalleria Rusticana by the Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga and are part of the “Verga itineraries”.
