The village of Nicosia (EN) stands on four cliffs on the southern slope of the Nebrodi mountain range, its medieval physiognomy perfectly intact.
The present-day town developed around the Arab-Norman castle, situated on the highest peak of the city, of which only the ruins of two watch towers and the pointed arch of the Norman bridge remain. It was built during the Byzantine era as a defence post on the site of the ancient city acropolis and in 1062 was conquered by the Normans.
Places of worship include the Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari whose sculpted rose windows are decorated with reliefs in stone, heraldic crests and designs and whose Gothic-Norman main door (also known as the door to Paradise) is flanked by statues of the cardinal virtues; the Romanesque Church of the Holy Saviour that stands on the hill dominating the residential settlement and the Basilica of St. Mary Major whose Baroque façade was never completed.
