Mineo (CT) is located on the slopes of the Iblei range. It was completely rebuilt and embellished with splendid Baroque buildings, after a devastating earthquake in the 1600s.
The historical centre includes the Baroque Adinolfo gate, the ancient entrance way to the city; several churches including those dedicated to St. Thomas and St. Agrippina; and the house where Luigi Capuana was born in 1839, today a museum. The writer is commemorated in a bronze statue created by Torre Nicolosi in 1936 which stands in piazza Buglio. The numerous architectural attractions of the town include the 17th century Palazzo Comunale with a large cloister and St. Mary Major, the earliest Christian church in Mineo, converted from an ancient temple to the Sun God in approximately 300 CE.
On the hill near the city, Mongialino Castle which dates to the 13th century CE, has a circular keep and polygonal defensive wall: all that can be seen inside are partial remains of the roof, with barrel vaults. Part of the territory near Mineo is occupied by the archaeological area of Palikè, location of the most important sanctuary for the Sicels.
