Commissioned towards the end of the 13th century by Philip I of Anjou, Prince of Taranto, and his wife, Catherine of Valois, the Church of St. Mary del Casale marks the architectural transition from Romanesque to Gothic in Brindisi, while historically the site was used in trials which lead to the dissolution of the Knights Templar in 1312. The portal, adorned with an elegant suspended porch with a rising stair of overhanging brackets, opens on the cuspidate façade, covered with pilasters supporting small arches. The play of colour of the wall decorations, in grey and gold sandstone, creates a refined geometric framework. The church is laid out in a Latin cross and covered with 14th century frescoes in Byzantine style: the counter façade holds a notable Universal Judgement by Rinaldo da Taranto.
