At the foot of Monte San Marco, 30km from Foggia and 635m above sea level, Orsara di Puglia is a splendid village surrounded by 1,200 hectares of forest which has been awarded the prestigious Orange Flag by the Touring Club of Italy.
Imposing and serene, the Abbey of Sant’Angelo stands on the edge of Orsara. Surrounded by vegetation, and custodian to both the Christian faith and a superlative example of religious architecture, the complex includes the Church of San Pellegrino, the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation and the Cave of St. Michael. The cave, dug out of a cleft in the rock in approximately 200 C.E., is one of the oldest places of worship in Southern Italy.
Orsara is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural gems whose centre is clustered with elegant palaces, narrow streets, tiny piazzas, and ancient bakery ovens, still functioning, including one dating back to the 16th century.
