Less than 40km from Foggia, Cerignola extends along the valleys of the Capitanata, between the rivers Ofanto and Carapelle. The fourth pillar of the economic rectangle formed by Bari, San Severo and Manfredonia, the area is dedicated to the production of cereals and oil.
The ancient quarter of Terra Vecchia is a medieval urban aggregate which was originally surrounded by walls and holds the Chiesa Madre, the oldest temple in the city. The ancient Roman Fosse Granarie can be visited in the city centre, while the 750 underground silos of the Piano delle Fosse bear unique and last witness to the ancient methods used in the Capitanata area for conserving grain, which is also the focus of the Museum of Grain.
Outside the city, sights worth seeing include the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Ripalta, the Il Monte Reserve whose pristine nature is a paradise for migratory birds and the river valleys of the Ofanto and Carapelle.
