Characteristic of the Gargano coastline is the trabucco, which can also be found in Molise and Abruzzo albeit with some differences in the platform. The trabucco was initially a fishing technique, a platform of Aleppo pinewood which extended from the cliffside where it was anchored with wide planks, out over the water, with wooden arms stretching out fishing nets. It is believed that this technique was invented by the Phoenicians and that the structures could have been used as war machines during the Middle Ages.
