The Castle has its origins in a Byzantine fortified military camp and in the 9th century received the addition of the 18m tall Torre dei Giganti, with 3m thick walls.
The Castle of Monte Sant'Angelo was expanded and improved by Emperor Frederick II for his mistress, Bianca Lancia, with whom he had two sons, Enzo and Manfredi. The graceful Sala del Tesoro, with pointed windows and a strong central column, dates back to this time.
