Situated in a strategic position between the main town of Rieti and the nearby Tiber Valley in the heart of the Sabine region, Casperia has an undeniably picturesque charm thanks to the presence of numerous medieval buildings: ancient four/five storey house-towers (buildings that were both residential and defensive) and the bell tower of the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Known as Aspra Sabina until 1947, it took its new name from that of a pre-Roman Sabine settlement mentioned in Book 7 of Virgil’s Aeneid.
