Situated on a hill at the foot of the Monti Ausoni range, the Farnese Castle was built in 1049 by Giovanni, also known as Scinto, son of Landolfo Count D’Aquino. It was modified many times in the following centuries as it passed to the Dell’Aquila family, the Abbey of Montecassino, the Angevin (1266), Spinelli (1331) and Della Rovere families, to the Kingdom of Naples and finally, in 1542, to the Farnese dynasty who gave it the name. Its most characteristic element, the Clock Tower whose name indicates the addition of a large Renaissance clock face, was built during this time.
Spreading out around the castle in the typical medieval layout of a feudal fortress, the borgo of Pico (FR) has several architectural and cultural features, such as the Churches of Sant'Antonino, San Rocco, Santa Maria in Campo, Santa Marina and the Sanctuary of Monte Leucio.
