Gradoli (VT) is located on the Monti Volsini chain, several km from the Lake of Bolsena, and dates back to the Middle Ages when an imposing castle was built in the area with a steep staircase (the Latin term gradus gives the name of the town) whose traces can still be seen in the walls of private residences. The moat was gradually absorbed into the urban setting of roads and squares.
The territory of Gradoli was bought by the Farnese family in 1505 and Pope Paul III (1534-49) commissioned Antonio Da Sangallo the Younger to build him a summer residence, Palazzo Farnese. This marked the start of the happiest period in the city’s history which continued until the decline of the Farnese family. In 1649, the territory passed to the Papal States until 1871 when it was annexed into the Kingdom of Italy.
