The residential centre of Roccalvecce, a hamlet of Viterbo, has very ancient origins. An Etruscan settlement, as demonstrated by the discovery of tombs dating to the 8th and 7th centuries BCE in the surrounding area, it then became a Roman castrum as the traces of opus reticulatum on the castle foundations attest.
The borgo grew up during the Middle Ages as a fortification for the feudal land owners. Costaguti Castle in the centre owes its names to the present owners. The main façade, overlooking piazza Umberto I, features the crests of the three families that have owned it: the Gatti, the Baglioni and the Costaguti. At the foot of the borgo is the “Vignaccia”, an 18th century garden belonging to the castle. The main entrance on via del Pino has a staircase leading to an 18th century fountain with balustrade and central column in grey volcanic tuff rock.
