The Castle Brown of Portofino, known as the Castle of St. George in the past, rises on the promontory of Portofino in the area of Tigullio.
The structure dates to 1425, when the Doge of the Republic of Genoa, Tommaso Fregoso, seized the fishing village and the ancient fortress for his defence against the Duchy of Milan. Over the course of centuries, the castle has undergone numerous expansions and has seen various owners, including the present management, the Municipality of Portofino.
The fortress is reached by walking through the Mediterranean garden, filled with flowers, roses and pergolas, that surrounds it. Two side terraces overlook the Gulf of Tigullio while the interior conserves original furnishings, bas-reliefs and architectural decoration in marble and slate. Restoration work has brought back the ancient splendour of the rooms, especially those on the upper floors, making them the perfect location for cultural events and exhibitions. The inner staircase is decorated with tiles, as is common in Liguria, and has a wooden coffered ceiling. One of the terraces, originally used to host the artillery, was transformed by the English Consul Montague Yeats Brown into a splendid hanging garden.
