Cropani (Catanzaro) is situated in a panoramic position on a hill, 10km from the sea and 13km from the Sila mountain range. The municipality includes the hamlets of Cropani Marina, with its white beaches and transparent water, and Cuturella di Cropani.
Legend holds that, in the early 9th century, a ship carrying the reliquaries of St Mark the Evangelist, stolen by Venetian sailors from Alexandria in Egypt, sheltered off the coast of Cropani. To demonstrate his gratitude, the captain gave the town a reliquary, a fragment of the saint’s kneecap, which is today conserved in the imposing Duomo dell’Assunta, dating to the 14th century, which also features a 43m bell tower topped with an eight-sided cupola covered in tiles.
The stone entrance gate to the historical centre leads to noble residences, with wrought iron balconies and stone portals, such as Palazzo Colucci and Palazzo De Paola. The medieval alleys of the centre lead to 13th century Church of Santa Lucia and 16th century Church di Santa Caterina. The latter stands inside a complex that includes an ancient oven and the Oratory of St. Ann which now houses the Antiquorium Archaeological Museum displaying the artefacts discovered in the surroundings.
