The Oratory of San Pellegrino and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Caporciano (AQ), a hamlet of Bominaco, constitute a complex of extraordinary artistic value linked to the history and establishment of the monastic order of St. Benedict. Set in luxuriant nature they are two splendid examples of Abruzzo Romanesque architecture. They date to the first centuries of Christianity, between the 3rd and 4th centuries when the body of the lay missionary, St. Pellegrino, was buried here, after being martyred, pierced by lances in Bominaco. The simple, essential exterior of the oratory contrasts with its precious interior which opens with a view of the stunning stone balustrades featuring carvings of a dragon and a griffon, and multicoloured frescoes depicting stories of the Infancy and passion of Christ, the Last Judgement, the life of St. Pellegrino and his fight with good and evil and the monastic calendar of Bominaco (Calendario Monastico Bominacense) which carefully reproduces the canons of miniaturist decoration on a monumental scale with extraordinary detail.
