Located in the very heart of the city, the so-called Borgo Umbertino, the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto - MArTA is housed in the former convent of the Alcantarines. Built in the 18th century and transformed into a prison after the French requisitions of 1861, the building was extensively renovated in 1903 thanks to the professional advice of the famous architect Guglielmo Calderini; it was also expanded between 1934 and 1941 with the addition of the northern wing, designed by Carlo Ceschi according to the style of the Fascist period.
Thanks to the recent renovation and complete rearrangement of the exhibition itinerary, completed in 2016, visitors can have a full experience of the Museum's rich archaeological collections, admiring the beauty of the world-famous gold jewellery, the sumptuous funerary furnishings and the architectural, sculptural and mosaic remains of the ancient city.
