Carrarese Castle in Este (Padua) is a military complex dating to the 1340s, built on the ruins of a previous fortification which was destroyed in 1238 by the troops of Ezzelino da Romano. The oldest part, conventionally dated to 1056 and commissioned by Alberto Azzo d'Este, was a circle of walls enclosing a small church and a large central building on the hilltop. This early structure was incorporated into a series of walls and residential buildings in the 11thcentury until the mid -13th century when the Marquis d'Este restored the castle, strengthening its defensive characteristics.
The square-plan building is surrounded by imposing walls spaced out by 12 small towers. The keep is located on the hill, to "watch over" the entire town; it ends with a square tower and has a small castle (the Rocca del Soccorso) to the north-east which was originally the entrance.
The park and public gardens are a popular destination for the unique setting and for the presence of valuable trees including the centuries-old wisteria that climbs the walls.
