Pojega is located on a sunny slope near the village of Negrar (Verona) in Valpolicella; the estate, owned by the Rizzardi counts since 1649, includes a large hilly area with vineyards, the ideal backdrop for the villa and its garden.
Present-day villa Rizzardi was built between 1868 and 1870 by architect Filippo Messedaglia. Featuring an eclectic style that mixes Baroque, Renaissance and Neo-Classical elements, the villa is used today for meetings, events, exhibitions and ceremonies.
Count Antonio Rizzardi commissioned architect Luigi Trezza to create a garden at the heart of the Pojega: the resulting structure has remained unchanged through the centuries. The garden covers 54,000 sqm on three parallel levels; a semicircle is the setting for a “theatre of vegetation” with steps carved out of box hedges. There is no lack of statuary: mythological characters and animals are positioned in surprising places in the little wood, which also features a circular temple with roof of vegetation and an orangery, on steps above the small lake.
