The large building which has housed the Palazzo delle Poste of Parma since 1909 and is bordered by piazza della Pace, via Pisacane, strada Cavour and via Melloni originally consisted of various houses surrounding the parish church of San Michele del Pertugio. Suppressed in 1653, the church was demolished in 1687 to make way for the Teatro Ducale, where shows were performed until 1829.
Known as the “Riserva” because it was used to house illustrious guests of the court during the early years of Bourbon rule, the building originally comprised not only the aforementioned theatre (whose surface area is now occupied by the Post Office and an internal courtyard), but also court residences and the casino frequented by nobles, courtiers and visitors.
Today the palace accomodates the Post Office, the Parma Reading Society, the Glauco Lombardi Museum and the Faculty of History of Theatre and Entertainment of the University of Parma.
