The Prosecco cemetery, one of the most important Austro-Hungarian cemeteries in Italy, is located not far from the centre of Trieste at the bottom of a karst sinkhole. It is easily reached on foot from the centre of Prosecco on the SP1 (provincial road) to Campo Sacro (about 500 metres).
Steps on the left of the entrance gate provide access to the cemetery. Inside, a wide avenue leads to the tombs of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell on the Triestine and Isonzo Carso. They hold the remains of 5,050 men of which 1,369 come from the former cemetery of Doberdò del Lago, 1,103 from Piedimonte (Mount Calvario) and 679 from neighbouring areas.
The names on the crosses demonstrate the range of nationalities in the Austro-Hungarian army: the surnames are German, Slavic, Hungarian, Polish and also Italian, given that Austria-Hungary then included present-day Venezia Giulia and Istria, inhabited by numerous Italian families.
