Palazzetto del Broletto in Pavia was the historic site for local government meetings (11th to 16th century), which gradually expanded to meet the growing needs of the municipal institution.
In keeping with the typical layout of public buildings, each block features a portico on the ground floor and a large meeting room on the upper floor.
The southern wing—overlooking piazza Cavagneria (named for the baskets that once held market goods)—was recently restored and is home to various cultural institutions and a space for contemporary arts. The northern wing, overlooking piazza Grande, has a 16th-century loggia that provides direct access to the salone degli affreschi.
The Broletto of Pavia is now home to the IUSS Pavia University School of Advanced Studies, an institute for advanced education and scientific research.
