Curon, an Italian Netflix original series produced by Indiana Production is now available in 190 countries. The supernatural drama recounts a journey of self-discovery and identity, with elements of mystery, legend and reality. Behind the camera are two directors, Fabio Mollo (eps. 1-4) and Lyda Patitucci (eps. 4-7), while the cast includes Valeria Bilello (Anna), Luca Lionello (Thomas), Federico Russo (Mauro), Margherita Morchio (Daria), Anna Ferzetti (Klara), Alessandro Tedeschi (Albert), Juju Di Domenico (Micki), Giulio Brizzi (Giulio), Max Malatesta (Ober) and Luca Castellano (Lukas).
Anna has just returned to the town of her childhood, Curon, with her adolescent twins, Mauro and Daria. When she mysteriously disappears, her children go on a journey that will take them to discover secrets hidden behind the small town’s apparently peaceful façade and are confronted with a side of their family that they have never seen before. They will find out that one can run from one’s past but never from oneself.
The backdrop for the series, Trentino and Alto Adige, is interesting, offering a natural setting that takes its place as a main character alongside the flesh and blood actors and creates a mysterious atmosphere that permeates the story. The village of Curon, which was the main location, stands on the shore of a lake which has submerged the old village, leaving only the bell tower rising eerily above the water’s surface. The production used sets in Bolzano, particularly in Val Venosta, in Curon and Malles and their surroundings, plus Caldaro Lake and San Felice.
One of the last residential centres in the Italian South Tyrol before the border with Austria, Curon has an unusual story: destroyed in 1950s when the Resia dam was built, only its bell tower peeks out of the waters of the manmade lake, creating an atmospheric and unique place.
