The first mission of the American army takes the player to Italy. It’s 18 September 1943, Operation Avalanche is in full swing and soldier Derrick Warren of the 82nd Infantry Division is near Altavilla (SA). His mission is to take back control of the town occupied by the German army. The game allows the player to explore very different environments. They initially find themselves on a hilltop road, in a training area in which the basic controls are explained. The setting, with its dry-stone walls lining the fields and trenches the player can take shelter in, features ancient columns in ruins, presumably from the Greek era. As the player continues with the mission, they come to the town, and among the houses destroyed in battle we see distinguishing features of Altavilla, like its small piazzas opening out onto the town’s main streets for example.

The game is based on events from the Second World War and, as is usual for the series, is divided into chapters centering around some of the most famous operations carried out by the American, Canadian and British armies. Over the course of their missions, the player participates in historic operations of the likes of Operation Avalanche, Operation Detroit and Operation Market Garden.
