Urska Djukic’s directorial debut, Little Trouble Girls, tells the story of introverted Lucia who sings in the choir of her Catholic school; during a weekend of rehearsals she begins to consider the world from a new perspective. As new desires, beliefs and values arise, she finds herself facing the first (important) challenges of her life and questions that she has never considered before: who owns my body? How do you manage friendship, jealousy, attraction?
The film is a co-production between Slovenia/Italy/Croatia/Serbia, produced by Spok Films, Staragara I.T., Izazov 365, Nosorogi, Non-Aligned Film, with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture with the support of the Slovenian Film Centre, RTV Slovenia, Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC), Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission.
The main location for the film was a monastery in the town of Cividale del Friuli, Friuli Venezia Giulia (province of Udine). Seventeen-year-old Lucia goes there with her school choir from Ljubljana to prepare their end-of-year concert. During the three days of intensive rehearsals Lucia begins to feel her body change and develop, intersecting with the awakening of her sexuality. The production filmed for 22 days in Cividale (of 29 total days), in the monastery of Santa Maria in Valle and the former monastic complex of San Francesco, in addition to the city centre near via Monastero Maggiore and the ponte del Diavolo.
Other locations included, San Pietro al Natisone, Pulfero and San Leonardo, the cave and Church of San Giovanni d'Antro, the Kot waterfall and the beaches of Biarzo and Tiglio & Muz on the Natisone river. The rest of the film was shot in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The 70-strong production employed approximately 35-40 permanent professionals, most of whom were residents in the region.
