A large Medieval
fortress, Rovereto Castle is a place of memory in Rovereto, and houses the
Italian War History Museum.
Situated in
a strategic location, on a rocky outcrop on the right bank of the River Leno,
Rovereto Castle has the imposing structure of a military fortress. The original structure was built by the
Castelbarco family between the 13th and 14th centuries and served as the base
for their feudal power in Lagarina Valley. In the 15th century, the castle fell
into the hands of the Venetians, who changed its physical appearance: the
polygonal layout and four imposing corner ramparts turned the castle into one
of the best example of Late Medieval alpine fortresses.
