Cape Miseno is volcanic headland (164m high) at the end of the Phlegraean Peninsula, extending from the municipality of Bacoli down to the harbour. It offers a breath-taking view across the Gulf of Naples with the islands of Ischia and Procida. A working lighthouse is located here with fortifications and pillboxes from WWII on the peak.
Located in Miseno, hamlet of the municipality of Bacoli, in the Phlegraean Peninsula, the area takes its name from the mythical Misenus, son of Aeolus, whose sacrifice – predicted by the Sybil of Cumae – would allow Aeneas to access the underworld.
Mseno has many historical and archaeological treasures including ruins of Roman era cisterns and villas in the ancient city. On the eastern side of Miseno, a Roman nymphaeum, dug out of tuff rock, is partly submerged by the sea; an ancient manor house has a tower with dovecotes and the Torre Bassa dates to the time of the Saracens. Also worthy of note is the Piscina Mirabilis, the great cistern that provided water for the ships of Augustus’ fleet.
The popular beach of Miliscola is located 2km from Bacoli, on the very tip of the Phlegraean peninsula of Cape Miseno.
