Inscribed as a UNESCO site in 1998, Aquileia’s rich heritage is tangible evidence of a city that was one of the richest capitals of the Roman Empire.
The town boasts an archaeological area of exceptional importance comprising the remains of the Roman forum, a necropolis, the imposing structures of the ancient river port and private homes with mosaic floors. These include the Domus of Titus Macro, which, at 1,700 sqm, is one of the largest Roman homes discovered in Northern Italy, and shows how daily life unfolded in a home in the ancient city.
The imposing Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, which overlooks the historic piazza Capitolo, is of great significance: built over a 4th-century structure, numerous extensions were added over the following centuries, then largely destroyed during the barbarian invasions. The Basilica holds the largest floor mosaic in the Western Christian world, dating to the 4th century.
