Description

The Sartorio Civic Museum, recently reopened to the public after years of restoration, is housed in the 18th century villa that belonged to the Sartorio family.
It preserves original 19th century furnishings, a collection of precious ceramics, a large art collection, and the Rusconi-Opuich collection which includes approximately 2,500 artefacts, from ancient to 20th century (paintings, drawings, prints, jewellery, fabrics, silver, etc.), an important collection of drawings by Tiepolo, and the Triptych of Santa Chiara, a masterpiece of 14th-century Trieste.
The basement displays the applied art and jewellery collections and the remains of a 1st century AD Roman domus which was found during the restoration work. The picture gallery in the former stables includes over a thousand paintings from the collections of the Civic Museums of History and Art. The former carriage depot is used as a plaster-cast museum, with around six hundred sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries.
