Piazza del Mercato in Inverigo, a small town in the Brianza area of Como, is notable for the structure that gives its name – two large areas with a gabled terracotta roof supported by pillars – and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Noce.
The sanctuary was built in the early 16th century on a cross-shaped plan, with side chapels dedicated to Saint Charles and Saint Joseph. Its origins are linked to a local legend from 1501 that recounts how two children lost in the woods saw the Virgin Mary in a walnut tree who gave them bread. To commemorate the miracle, the small church was built in 1519.
The two market porticos that flank it today date to the 19th century. However, a portico was also present in earlier times, when monolithic stones placed in the square were used by tinsmiths to coat copper artifacts with tin.
