Description

Aspromonte in the province of Reggio Calabria is a mountain range of the Apennines that extends in overlapping terraces.
The national park that bears its name stretches between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, its peaks offer a view of Mount Etna and the Aeolian islands. Sheer rockfaces alternate with narrow valleys whose flowing rivers often form picturesque waterfalls. The narrow strip of land that separates the mountain range from the sea features many promontories that rise steep over the water, such as mount Sant'Elia, lake Rumia, near Gambarie, and lake Costantino, in the Bonamico valley, offer stunning views.
The highest peak, Montalto (1,956 m), is ancient rock with a base covered in Mediterranean maquis. The Ionian rockface features spiky juniper living alongside mastic, myrtle, European wild pear and tamarisk. The higher regions are covered with woods, most of the coastline is thick with citrus groves and vineyards.  The ski resort of Gambarie, with a view of the sea, is located at 1,311 m.
