Description

Avellino is considered the capital of the Irpinia area. It is located in the flatlands of the so-called conca Avellinese, a large valley of volcanic origin, surrounded by the Monti Picentini.

The historical centre, characterised by elegant squares and buildings, has conserved its medieval characteristics. The Duomo, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and San Modestino, has a neoclassical facade in white and grey marble and contains paintings from the 16th century and an ancient Roman crypt.

Significant monuments include: the 40m tall town symbol, the Torre dell’Orologio in Piazza Amendola, the 17th century Fountain of Bellerofonte, designed by Cosimo Fanzago, and the ruins of the Lombard Castle. Avellino also hosts the majestic hexagonal Bourbon Prison Complex, one of the earliest examples of a prison structure inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment.
