Castle Cantelmo in Alvito (FR) is an ancient fortress that dominates the Valley of Comino, where the regions of Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise meet.
The little centre of Castello, a hamlet of Alvito, was inhabited when the ancient rural and Benedictine settlement of Civita di Sant'Urbano was abandoned between the 9th and 11th centuries. At the time, Alvito and Castello were Norman, becoming Swabian under Duke Frederick II and later Angevin. During this time, the D’Aquino family ruled the area, followed in the 1300s by the Cantelmo family, originally from France.
The Castle remained mostly intact until the end of the 19th century, however earthquakes in the 20th century have caused the loss of most of its identifying elements.
