The 249-hectare Tenuta di Acquafredda Regional Nature Reserve is part of the environmental system of Ponte Galeria-Arrone, situated to the north west of Rome. Once the property of the monks of San Pancrazio, the Reserve gets its name from the chilly temperature of the water coming from the fosso della Magliana.
The Acquafredda valley is flanked by numerous smaller valleys that open out in sediments of sand and clay and, in places, tuff rock. The fertile soil has encouraged the proliferation of cork tree, turkey oak, dog rose, horsetail, juniper, cardoon and orchid, although most of the vegetable species are only found close to the watery areas. Clumps of willow trees and bullrushes on the water welcome birds typical of wetlands, including coots, river nightingales, penduline tits and moorhens.
