The Valle dei Casali Nature Reserve is part of the Gianicolense and Portuense neighbourhoods in the west of Rome. A high plain that rises over 80m, it provides a green corridor inside an urban area that extends from the park of Villa Pamphilj in the north and slopes south to the Tiber River in rolling hills. Its vegetation is the result of the predominantly agricultural use of the soil, the presence of a dense network of streams, the River Tiber and its proximity to urbanized areas.
The area is interesting historically for the large number of villas and farmhouses. For example, 18th century Villa York is a good example of a suburban noble villa combined with working farm, in this case a rare example of Roman “vigna”, a large orchard with vegetable garden and vineyard.
