The proton therapy centre in Trento is a specialist facility for the treatment of tumours using an innovative proton therapy technique; a precision radiation treatment that uses heavy particles to tackle sick cells. The centre is an operational detachment of Trento’s Santa Chiara hospital and is the only centre of this type in Europe that is part of the public health system. Furthermore, it is the only centre in Italy with these cutting-edge technologies, which also facilitate important research work in the clinical and preclinical field.
The building comprises two adjacent functional blocks, which include a bunker used for the proton treatment. Also in the building is the healthcare area on three superimposed levels.
