Govone Castle (CN) is located on a hill that dominates the village and the surrounding valleys, on the site of a medieval fortress. At the end of the 17th century, architect Guarino Guarini was commissioned to expand and beautify the castle by Count Solaro, however the project was actually overseen a century later by architect Benedetto Alfieri who followed Guarini’s designs.
The monumental, theatrical staircase with two ramps, decorated with reliefs and supporting statues immediately attracts the attention. Inside, some reception rooms have priceless Chinese wallpaper while the ballroom features frescoes of the legend of Niobe by Luigi Vacca and Fabrizio Sevesi. The same painters were responsible for the frescoes in the large central reception room which uses trompe-l’oeil to simulate the presence of statues.
The castle become property of the Savoy family in 1792 and, after the Napoleonic era, was used as a summer residence. In the early 1800s, Charles Felix of Sardinia and his wife Maria Christina completely restored the castle and its park with Italian garden. The Castle – which once hosted Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1730 – became property of the Municipality of Govone at the end of the 1800s.
The castle has been included in the 8-castle series known as the “Castelli DOC” since 2007. It is also inscribed in the "Castelli Aperti" Basso Piemonte series and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the series: Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.
